Friday Factoid: “Stop the Cavalry”

–By Brandon

“Stop the Cavalry” was released on December 8, 1980 and did not reach the top song on the UK Singles Chart, as it had to compete with being released on the same day John Lennon was murdered. The original song was written as an anti-war protest song, spanning the Crimean War through trenches and Winston Churchill from World War I to nuclear fallout shelters referencing Cold War tensions. Although the song was not intended as a Christmas song, its reference to Christmas and brass arrangements have made it another holiday favorite. Choir of the Sound’s arrangement of this piece was written by a former member, Patrick Gleason.
