he Choir of the Sound (COTS) was founded in 1977 by Robert Metzger as the Shoreline Community College Chorale, and assumed its present name in 1980. The Choir’s mission is to provide an outlet for musical expression and artistic performances that are educational, stimulating, and enriching to the cultural life of the community.
The choir is a non-profit organization associated with Shoreline Community
College. COTS has begun a new era under the direction of Judy Filibeck.
COTS is a leading community choir in the Puget Sound area, presenting concerts of demanding literature in an innovative and entertaining style. The choir has been recognized through the years for its impressive performances of major choral works, and continues this tradition each year in the Winter Classical Concert. In addition, the choir has added staging, lighting, and choreography to turn the Holiday and Spring Pops concerts into musical theater productions.
COTS has brought music to the Puget Sound area and has taken it abroad as well. The choir introduced The King’s Singers, the British sextet, to Seattle, and sponsored five separate performances with them at the Seattle Opera House. They also sponsored the group Rockapella for a successful Opera House performance. The choir performed a premiere concert, I Hear America Singing, with the familiar local quartet, The Brothers Four.

Tours of Europe in 1983 and 1995 featured performances in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany. In November 2005, COTS singers joined four other choirs and two New York City soloists in a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria under the direction of conductor Jonathan Griffiths, accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble. In the summer of 2007, COTS singers will tour Italy, performing in Florence, Venice, and Verona.
COTS continues singing in the community not only at its concert performances, but also at sporting events such as Seattle Mariners, Seattle Sounders, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Everett Aquasox games, and aboard Argosy Christmas Ship cruises.
